How to create a mini wildflower meadow

5 Minute Read
If you've ever dreamed of transforming a small corner of your garden or outdoor space into a vibrant haven for biodiversity, you're in the right place. In this guide we cover practical insights and give you step-by-step instructions to turn a modest patch of land into a flourishing habitat for pollinators.

Growing your own wildflower meadow

Creating a wildflower rich lawn, patch of grass or even a container garden helps to build new habitat opportunities for a wealth of pollinators, if you are interested in creating a diverse habitat and maximise your lawn for wildlife, keep reading for our step by step guide.

When to sow wildflower seeds
Annual wildflower meadows are generally sown during autumn and spring, as the ground is still warm and the weather is mild. For mini meadows sown in autumn, expect flowering early the following year.

Preparing the lawn
Before you can begin sowing your wildflower seeds, first prepare the area you are looking to transform. Remove larger weeds and existing grass from the area give the ground a good rake to create a level bed for your wildflower seeds.

FHG TIP:
Wildflowers prefer low nutrient soil and can survive harsh growing conditions, removing competing plants allows your wildflowers to germinate effectively. Avoid feeding or using a nutrient rich compost.

How to sow wildflower seeds
Once your meadow area is ready for seed sowing, scatter your wildflower seeds evenly following the manufacturers recommended rate, gently rake again and firm the top layer of soil.

FHG TIP:
Blend your seeds with horticultural sand for a visual marker of which areas have been sown and to make application easier.

Managing a wildflower meadow
Water your newly sown seeds in well and if the weather is particularly dry, water regularly, especially during the first six weeks. If needed, protect your newly sown meadow with specialist netting to stop pests, such as birds away.

FHG TIP:
During August and September, once your meadow is established and has flowered for the year, cut the area back to roughly 8cm and leave the cuttings on the area for up to a week to encourage reseeding.
