How to fix your scorched grass and prevent it from happening again

Revitalise your lawn with our expert advice on remedying scorched patches and transforming your dry, lacklustre grass into a lush, vibrant lawn. Discover the essential tips to rescue your lawn from the brink of despair and achieve a flawless, revitalised landscape.

Our top tips to gardening during a heatwave

Maintaining your lawn during the summer can be a tricky and sometimes tedious job, especially when there is much more foot traffic all over it when it’s warmer. It is an important feature of the garden, during the summer kids will play on the lawn and it is usually the centre of any garden party.

When there are more feet on it and higher heat, it doesn’t take much for the lawn to get scorched and die. The first step is to identify what the difference between dead grass and brown grass is. They both look similar and there is only really one way to find out which it is.

You’ll need to add water to your grass to find out… if it is dead, you will see no change and remain in a poor state. If it is just browning, it can be brought back to life. You’ll need to give it a few inches of consistent watering to get your results. It may result in being patchy so some parts may need to be restored.

How to fix your scorched grass

If your lawn is patchy, you’ll need to rake out the dead patches and then seed the patches you’ve raked, add some fertiliser and give it a good water. Keep the soil moist and do not let it dry out. If your grass is completely dead, then we’d suggest raking the whole lawn and reseeding the entire area. Alternatively, you may want to returf your grass for faster improvement. Try not to feed the damaged or dead grass as that can only make the burning worse.

How to prepare next spring ahead of sun scorching

If you have a healthy and green lawn you should still put in some precautions for later in the year to protect it. We would advise that you water your lawn regularly, ideally in the evening when it is cooler to avoid it drying out and burning in the day, if you have gaps in your lawn, you can overseed it ahead of time to fill them and help your grass look fuller and thicker.

Try not to mow your lawn too often and don’t cut it too short as not only will this make the grass more vulnerable to scorching but it will appear in a far worse condition and may look patchy and dry. If you are going to mow your lawn, aim to take no more than 1/3rd off of the top.

Seeding your grass earlier in the year will help it maintain health during the hotter months and may be far easier to manage. If you have got a healthy lawn, fertiliser may be beneficial but be sure to choose a fertiliser that is designed for heat such as a Spring and Summer mix.
